After our time in New Zealand, we weren’t sure what we would be in store for in Australia. We were just getting our travel legs on the ground and we were ready to see what Australia would offer us. We didn’t go as extreme in Australia as we did in our New Zealand Adventures, but they were still some pretty awesome adventures nonetheless.
Great Ocean Road
One of the first things we did after arriving in Australia was head out to the Great Ocean Road for some exploration. We camped on beaches with other backpackers and had a blast exploring some the roads most famous stops. It was the perfect start to our 8 weeks in Australia packing in koala bears, cockatoos, beaches, ocean, lighthouses, the Twelve Apostles and stunning scenery.
Fraser Island 4×4 Off-Roading
We were skeptical about taking the time to visit this gigantic sand island. What started out as an unsure feeling became an overwhelming adventure that still stands out as some of our best days in Australia and our first 6 months of long term travel. We spent 4 days driving 4×4’s around the sand island, bush camping on the beach and exploring the many wonders of the World’s largest sand island.
Scuba Diving on the Great Barrier Reef
Despite the fact that neither of us had scuba dived before, we booked ourselves on a 4 day boat trip around the Whitsundays and Outer Great Barrier Reef. We jumped in head first (no pun intended!) and fell in love with diving. Going underwater on the Great Barrier Reef has been a life long dream for both of us and was one of our greatest adventures in Australia.
Campervan Adventure – Self Drive Tour
The ultimate Australian adventure, living out of a campervan while you travel up the iconic coast from Melbourne to Cairns. We hooked up with Jucy Campervans for our wheels over our 5 week road trip that took use from Melbourne, up the Great Ocean Road and all the way to Cairns. We camped at beaches, National Parks, free camps, waysides and camper parks making it an incredibly diverse adventure.
Cage Diving with Crocodiles
If you want an extreme adventure, then hop into a plexi cage with some of the World’s largest crocodiles. Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin is the only place in the World that you can get up close and personal with Australia’s infamous Salties. These guys are fierce and extremely powerful, which makes for an adrenaline pumping adventure. I mean, they don’t call it the Cage of Death for nothing.
