A Historic and Important National Park
An often overlooked area of spectacular natural beauty and somewhere that everybody should visit is Yellowstone National Park. The oldest National Park in the world (1872), Yellowstone is a staggering 3,500-sq-mile and comprises of lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. Situation mainly in Wyoming, the park spreads into Montana and Idaho and is the centerpiece of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem; the largest remaining nearly intact ecosystem in the globe’s northern temperature zone.
Sitting on top of a dormant volcano, Yellowstone is a UNESCO protected area that boasts a unique combination of geothermal forces, natural beauty and rugged ecosystems.
Here you will find awe-inspiring lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges, with the stunning high-elevation lake centered over the famous Yellowstone Caldera – the largest super volcano on the continent. This unique eco-system means the park is teaming with beautiful and often protected and endangered wildlife.
Black bears, wild horses, grizzly bears, moose, bald eagles, buffalo, bison and antelope all call Yellowstone their home and more recently, grey wolves have been reintroduced to the park after having been almost completely killed off in the 1920s with the current population standing at roughly 104 wolves among eleven packs.
Whilst the Grand Canyon of Arizona, might be America’s biggest and most famous natural landmark, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone is just as breath-taking with numerous vantage points on all sides. At twenty miles long, the canyon is over 1200 meters wide and 365 meters deep in places with three particularly impressive sights in the Lower, Upper and Crystal Falls. Each was formed the Yellowstone River’s flow over progressively softer and less resistant rock.
Fascinating Geothermal Features
Yellowstone National Park is also is home to approximately 50 percent of the world’s hydro thermal features, including the most famous of all geysers Old Faithful which erupts every 44 to 125 minutes with water temperature that has been measured at 204°F. Universally recognized as a natural wonder of the United States, the famous geyser can be relied upon to erupt around twenty times a day and can be predicted with a 90 per cent confidence rate within a ten minute variation. Before the 1959 earthquake however, Old Faithful was fare more active and erupted on average twenty one times per day. Other geothermal features include steam vents, bubbling mud holes, hot springs, waterfalls and thermal pools.
Winter in Yellowstone National Park
Winter in Yellowstone is an unrivaled and intimate experience. Although most roads and hotels are closed, visitors can take advantage of this unique tranquillity to travel through the park via snow coaches or snowmobiles with an authorized guide.
Visitors can cross country ski or snowshoe in the park on miles of groomed trails, partake in wildlife watching or simply escape for a quiet and majestic retreat in an unspoiled winter wonderland.

For adventurous types, this is an incredible place to come as it is essentially a giant natural playground. With tour organizers, such as Trek America, you can visit this amazing National Park and try your hand at all kinds of fun and thrilling outdoor activities. This is the best way to see the park as you can learn all about it whilst undertaking a variety of excellent activities. This could include horse riding, mountain biking, and white water rafting. Often, these tours extend into other areas and cities and they are a great way to see the varied and beautiful terrain found in the United States.
The USA is packed full of astonishing natural beauty from east to west. There are many wonderful places to visit and sights to behold, but perhaps most amazing is Yellowstone National Park. With so much history, stunning views, rare wildlife and fascinating geothermal features; this park is one of the most picturesque and intriguing areas in the entire world.
