The Seychelles is one of the world’s most biodiverse tropical destinations, and deciding the best time to visit the Seychelles depends largely on what you want to do and when you’re able to go.
The islands are located just south of the equator and are famously known for their white-sand beaches framed by granite boulders, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and unique endemic wildlife. They enjoy warm, tropical weather all year, but seasonal trade winds and occasional rain showers influence conditions month to month.
This guide breaks down the climate, seasonal highlights, and the best times to plan your trip based on your interests.
Figuring Out the Best Time to Visit Seychelles
Seychelles Climate Overview

The Seychelles enjoys a consistently warm, tropical climate year-round, with average daytime temperatures ranging between 26°C and 32°C (79°F to 90°F). Humidity is relatively high but moderated by sea breezes, and the ocean remains warm enough for swimming and water activities throughout the year, with average sea temperatures around 27°C (80°F).
Instead of four distinct seasons, Seychelles experiences two main weather patterns influenced by the trade winds: the northwest monsoon (October to March) and the southeast trade winds (May to September). Each brings slightly different conditions, affecting everything from sea currents to rainfall and wind strength.
- Northwest monsoon (October – March): This is the warmer, more humid part of the year with lighter winds and calmer seas, ideal for swimming, diving, and boat excursions. Rainfall peaks in December and January but usually comes as short, heavy showers followed by sunshine.
- Southeast trade winds (May – September): This period is cooler, drier, and windier, creating excellent conditions for sailing and hiking but sometimes causing rougher seas and stronger currents, particularly on south- and east-facing beaches.
The transitional months of April and October are considered the most balanced, offering calm seas, warm temperatures, and excellent visibility for underwater activities.
Seychelles Weather: A Month-by-Month Breakdown
January, February, and March: Warm, Wet, and Lush

This period is part of the northwest monsoon and is the warmest and wettest time of year. Daily highs average around 30–31°C (86–88°F), and humidity is at its peak.
Tropical rain showers are frequent, especially in January, but they’re usually short-lived and often followed by clear skies. The vegetation is at its greenest, and waterfalls and forest trails are especially scenic.
This is also a great time for birdwatching, as many species are nesting, and for turtle hatchings, which often occur from January through March. However, high humidity and occasional rough seas can make travel slightly less predictable.
April: Calm Seas and Excellent Diving

April marks the first major transition of the year and is widely considered one of the best months to visit Seychelles. Winds are at their weakest, seas are calm, and water visibility is at its highest, making it an ideal time for snorkeling and diving.
Air temperatures remain around 30°C (86°F), and rainfall drops significantly. It’s also a great time for beach vacations, as the water is especially clear and calm, and for exploring marine parks by kayak or paddleboard.
May, June, July, August, and September: Cooler, Drier, and Windier

The southeast trade winds bring slightly cooler temperatures (averaging 26–29°C / 79–84°F) and lower humidity. Rainfall decreases, making this a good time for hiking, exploring national parks, and sightseeing.
The wind can cause rougher sea conditions, particularly on the southeast-facing beaches, but sheltered bays remain calm and swimmable. This is the best season for sailing and wind-based water sports like kitesurfing.
June, July, and August are particularly popular months for European visitors, coinciding with the northern hemisphere’s summer vacations, so expect higher demand for flights and accommodations.
We visited in early July on our last visit. The weather was lovely with warm, sunny days and cooler evenings. We had the occasional morning rain cloud, but no sustained rain. The sea conditions were on the rough side, with most days offering crashing waves on the beaches. Did we still love it? YES!
October: Another Ideal Transition Month

Like April, October is another excellent time to visit, with calm seas, warm temperatures, and excellent underwater visibility. This is peak season for scuba diving and snorkeling, and sea conditions are ideal for island-hopping and marine excursions.
The islands are still relatively green from the southeast trade winds’ dry period, and wildlife activity like bird nesting and turtle arrivals remains high. It’s a good choice for travelers seeking a balance of good weather and fewer crowds before the peak vacation season begins.
November and December: Warm and Calm with Increasing Rainfall

The return of the northwest monsoon brings warmer temperatures and calmer seas, though rainfall begins to increase, especially in December. This is a good period for beach vacations, swimming, and diving, with water temperatures around 29°C (84°F).
Turtle nesting season also peaks in November and December, offering opportunities to witness one of the Seychelles’ most remarkable wildlife events. December is a popular month for vacation travel, so booking well in advance is essential.
Best Times Based on Activities and Interests
- Best for Beach Vacations: April, May, October, and November are ideal months for beachgoers, with warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and calm seas. These conditions make swimming and sunbathing especially enjoyable.
- Best for Snorkeling and Diving: April and October stand out for their excellent underwater visibility and calm sea conditions. These months offer the best chance to see coral reefs, turtles, and tropical fish in clear water.
- Best for Sailing and Water Sports: May to September is the best period for sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing due to the steady southeast trade winds.
- Best for Wildlife and Nature: October to March is prime time for turtle nesting, while January to April is excellent for birdwatching, particularly on nature reserves like Cousin Island and Aride.
- Best for Hiking and Outdoor Exploration: The drier, cooler months from May to September are most comfortable for hiking and exploring nature trails, such as those in Morne Seychellois National Park or Vallée de Mai.
Peak vs. Shoulder vs. Low Season
The Seychelles does not have a traditional high and low season in the way that many destinations do, but there are noticeable patterns in pricing and crowds:
- Peak Season: June to August and December to early January are the busiest and most expensive times to visit, coinciding with European summer vacations and Christmas travel. Flights and accommodation prices are at their highest, and booking several months in advance is recommended.
- Shoulder Seasons: April to May and September to November are considered shoulder periods. These months offer some of the best weather conditions and fewer crowds, often at slightly lower prices.
- Low Season: January to March sees fewer tourists due to higher humidity and rainfall, which can translate into lower prices on flights and accommodations. If you don’t mind occasional showers, this can be a budget-friendly time to visit.
Final Thoughts: Choosing the Best Time for You

The Seychelles is a true year-round destination, and no matter when you go, the tropical climate, rich biodiversity, and stunning natural landscapes ensure that you’ll find something special.
I wouldn’t hesitate to visit at any time during the year. It’s that good.
